Different types of biomass are already used as a source of energy in all sectors: as a source of heat in buildings, as a stand-alone or mixed with fossil fuels to reduce it’s carbon footprint, as a raw material in power generation for generation facilities, and as a source of heat, energy or feedstock for manufacturing processes.

Bioenergy will have an important role in reducing carbon emissions as a substitute for fossil alternatives. It is essential to ensure that the growth in demand for bioenergy is carried out in a sustainable manner, avoiding adverse social, environmental or economic impacts.

Biomass is replacing fossil feedstocks in refining and petrochemical processes

Biomass continues to replace fossil raw materials in the transport sector. Biofuels are already being used, either by replacing fossil fuels entirely (ethanol) or by mixing them in different proportions with gasoline and diesel.

Refineries are increasingly including biomass-based units in their production processes to generate biofuels for aviation, shipping or heavy trucks.

In petrochemicals, biomass is an alternative to using fossil fuels, through biomaterials or as biomass building blocks. The key biobased raw materials to produce plastics are bioethylene, biomethanol or bionaphtha.

Biomass can be used in transport, power generation and buildings

Bioenergy-based electricity is already playing an important role as a safe renewable energy source that balances the contribution of intermittent wind and solar renewable energy.

Combined with carbon capture and storage, it also generates negative carbon emissions. Biomethane can be mixed into natural gas networks, making use of existing gas infrastructure. It can also be burned in gas turbines and combined cycle power plants.

Biomethane can be used as a substitute for natural gas in existing light and heavy-duty natural gas-powered vehicles.

We know how to integrate biomass in existing production processes

We are designing units to include biomass in the production of biofuels such as diesel and kerosene in existing refineries, we are also defining basic chemical plants to produce bio methanol from waste and wood biomass.

The world’s largest biomass power generation plant at the time, in Teesside, UK, with a capacity of 300MW, was built by our team of experts and we have proprietary technologies to use biomass waste to produce levulinic acid, a basic component with application in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry, among others.
