Acerinox and Tecnicas Reunidas will work together on the decarbonisation of the Acerinox Europa plant in Cadiz.

  • The project will pay special attention to the possibilities offered by the application of decarbonisation technologies such as electrification with renewable energies, green or blue hydrogen, bio-energies, or carbon capture and storage.
  • In this way, Acerinox accelerates its compliance with the decarbonisation requirements in line with the European Green Pact presented by the European Union.

Acerinox and Técnicas Reunidas have reached an agreement to work together in the study of the decarbonisation process of the Acerinox Europa facilities, the plant that the former owns in Los Barrios (Cádiz). This is an integrated stainless steel production plant with more than 1,800 employees and a production capacity of over one million tonnes per year.

The project seeks to identify the most suitable decarbonisation technologies for each industrial sub-process, with special attention to electrification from renewable energies, green or blue hydrogen, bio-energies, and carbon capture and storage.

The technologies finally selected will reconcile the operational requirements of the facilities with the decarbonisation objectives, thus anticipating the new regulatory requirements in this area that the European Union has just announced.

Based on this analysis, a roadmap will be designed including medium and long-term objectives, to which the investment schedule to be assumed by Acerinox to achieve its decarbonisation objectives shall be adjusted. This schedule will be based on technological and business maturity criteria for each technology, as well as on the optimisation of Acerinox investment.

Acerinox will contribute to this project its extensive know-how, facilities and commitment to innovation in the industry, as well as the opportunity for improvement as part of our culture.

In turn, Técnicas Reunidas will bring to the project its extensive knowledge and experience in the different technologies associated with energy transition and their integration into complex industrial processes. This project with Acerinox is one of the first steps taken by Técnicas Reunidas in its aim to diversify the decarbonisation and energy transition actions it has been developing in the recent years in its usual fields of activity, and to extend them to other industries that are intensive in energy consumption.
