Técnicas Reunidas awarded the contract for a power plant to supply energy to a large META Data Center and Artificial Intelligence facility in Canada

• This is the first project Técnicas Reunidas is undertaking as part of its strategy to enter the large data center market, which is currently one of its main growth drivers.
• The contract is fully aligned with two of the main pillars of its SALTA Strategic Plan: increasing its presence in North America and boosting activities in the energy sector through TR Power.
• With this contract, Técnicas Reunidas has now surpassed 6,000 million euros in new contracts awarded so far this year.

On July 2, Greenlight Electricity Center Limited Partnership (a partnership formed by Pembina Pipeline Corporation, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners, and Kineticor Asset Management) awarded the contract to develop a combined-cycle gas power plant to a consortium formed by Técnicas Reunidas and Aecon.

The plant, with a capacity of 932 MW, will be built in the Canadian province of Alberta and dedicated entirely to supplying power to a large META data center.

This data center is part of a large-scale artificial intelligence project that META will develop in Alberta at a cost of more than 8,000 million euros, representing one of the largest private investments in Canadian history.

The plant is designed to incorporate carbon capture systems and could double its capacity to 1,864 MW in the future.

Greenlight is the first project undertaken by Técnicas Reunidas as part of its strategy to enter the data center market for hyperscalers—service providers that operate in the cloud through large data centers—with META among the most important.

Penetrating this sector is one of the main drivers the Company has identified for the growth of its activities in the coming years, particularly in North America.

This contract award further reinforces the visibility of Técnicas Reunidas’ capability in developing electrical infrastructure critical to meeting the growing demand driven by artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, data centers, and general electrification trends.

The scope of the contract, valued at 570 million euros for Técnicas Reunidas, includes engineering, procurement, commissioning, and start-up of the power plant.
The Company will carry out this work through its subsidiary TR Power, which was recently established to optimize its operations in the power generation sector.

Construction activities for the project will be carried out by Aecon, a local partner of Técnicas Reunidas and one of North America’s leading construction and infrastructure companies. In fact, this contract was awarded following a preliminary phase in which Técnicas Reunidas and Aecon provided engineering services, among others, for the early stages of the project. The plant is expected to begin operations in the second half of 2030.

With this contract, Técnicas Reunidas has now surpassed 6,000 million euros in new contract awards so far this year.

Expanding presence in North America

The Greenlight project aligns with two of the main pillars of the company’s SALTA Strategic Plan.

On the one hand, it contributes significantly to the goal of increasing the company’s presence in the North American market, where it has maintained permanent offices in Houston (United States) since 2024 and in Calgary (Canada) since 2014.

Some recent examples of this significant expansion include two other major contracts awarded this year: the contract to perform the design engineering for a natural gas liquefaction and export plant on the Texas Gulf Coast for Coastal Bend LNG, which marks Técnicas Reunidas’ entry into the large U.S. gas liquefaction market; and the contract for design engineering services for Phase 2 of the Coastal GasLink pipeline, located in the Canadian province of British Columbia.

The three contracts secured in the North American market this year are part of the company’s portfolio of potential projects in that region, valued at 28,000 million euros.

A significant portion of this portfolio consists of about a dozen high-capacity combined-cycle gas power plants, intended primarily to meet the high and growing energy needs driven by the boom in large data centers being developed in the region, such as the Greenlight project for META.

Growth in the energy sector through TR Power

Furthermore, the development of these large combined-cycle power plants also aligns with another pillar of the Salta Strategic Plan: capitalizing on the unprecedented opportunities emerging in the global energy production market.

These enormous opportunities are driven primarily by different factors in each of the geographic areas where the company operates: the rapid industrialization in the Middle East; the major decarbonization projects in Europe that are essential for meeting climate change mitigation goals; and, as just noted, the enormous energy demand generated by the relentless expansion of large data centers in North America.

To capitalize on these opportunities and optimize the resources and methods acquired over more than 30 years of experience in gas-fired power generation—which includes more than 26 GW of installed capacity to date, with another 13 GW currently under construction—Técnicas Reunidas established TR Power earlier this year.

This new subsidiary also benefits from the close, long-standing relationships established over the years with the world’s four major gas turbine manufacturers and draws on their proven technical expertise to ensure lower-risk execution of such projects.

The excellent outlook for this market suggests that TR Power could account for up to one-third of Técnicas Reunidas’ revenue by 2030.
